How To Change A Lightbulb

Changing a lightbulb is something that’s easy to do on your own, and you won’t incur any charges if you replace it yourself! For a visual guide, CLICK HERE.

To change a standard lightbulb, follow these instructions:

1. Turn Off The Power.

Flip the light switch off. If it’s a ceiling fixture without a switch, turn off the circuit breaker for extra safety.

2. Let The Bulb Cool.

If the light was recently on, wait a few minutes so the bulb isn’t hot.

3. Get A Stable Surface.

Use a sturdy step stool or ladder if the fixture is out of reach.

4. Remove The Old Bulb.

  • Standard screw-in bulb: Turn the bulb counterclockwise until it comes loose.
  • Pin or twist-lock bulb: Gently push in and twist, or pull the pins straight out depending on the type

5. Insert The New Bulb.

6. Turn The Power Back On.

Switch the light on to make sure it works.

7. Dispose Of The Old Bulb Properly.

LEDs and halogens can go in regular trash (wrapped, so as to avoid broken glass). CFL bulbs must be recycled because they contain a small amount of mercury. The type of lightbulb you have will be displayed on the bulb itself, no need for guesswork.

Here is a helpful YouTube video that will assist you if you are working with a flush mount light, a fixture often seen in kitchens or bedrooms.
