Plumbing Etiquette in Apartment Living

• Avoid pouring grease, oil, or cooking fat down drains – These materials can harden inside pipes over time and contribute to blockages that affect not only your apartment, but neighboring homes as well. • Only flush toilet paper – Products labeled as “flushable” wipes, paper towels, hygiene products, and similar items do not break down the same way as toilet paper and can lead to serious plumbing problems throughout the building. • Use shower curtains or doors properly – Water that escapes onto the floor can find its way into walls, neighboring apartments, or ceilings below, sometimes causing significant damage before it is discovered. • Report leaks and drainage issues early – Slow drains, dripping fixtures, and running toilets are often easier to resolve before they become larger maintenance issues.

Running Water or Leaks

• Act quickly if you see or hear running water – Water damage can become expensive and disruptive if left unattended. • Shut off the water if possible – Many sinks and toilets have nearby shutoff valves that can stop the flow until help arrives. • Contact your leasing office immediately – If you cannot stop the leak or are unsure where it is coming from, treat it as a maintenance emergency.

Toilet Clogged?

• Stop flushing immediately – Additional flushing can cause the toilet to overflow and create water damage. • Try using a plunger – A few firm plunges will often clear common clogs caused by excess toilet paper. • If the clog remains – Contact your leasing office for assistance and avoid using the affected fixture until it has been cleared.

Slow Drain in Sink or Tub

Slow drains are commonly caused by hair, soap buildup, or debris near the drain opening. • Remove visible hair or debris first – A drain weasel or similar tool can often resolve minor clogs near the drain opening. • Try a safe clog-removing gel if needed – Follow the product instructions carefully and avoid mixing cleaning products. • If drainage does not improve – Contact your leasing office for assistance before the blockage becomes worse.
