How To Change Batteries In Your Smoke Or Carbon Monoxide Alarm
Keeping the batteries in your smoke alarm or carbon monoxide detector working is required by law. More importantly, it’s a critical safety measure. These detectors alert you to hazardous conditions in your apartment, and while we hope they never go off, they are extremely important.

To change the batteries in your smoke or carbon monoxide alarm:
1. Remove The Device From The Wall Or Ceiling.
Most units twist counterclockwise (i.e. to the left) to release from the mounting bracket, while some slide off or have a small release tab.

2. Open The Battery Compartment.
Look for a small door on the back or side. Press the latch on this door or slide it open.
3. Take Out The Old Batteries.
These devices typically use an AA, an AAA, or a 9-volt battery. Check what your unit needs and make sure the battery you get matches what’s in there.
4. Insert The New Batteries.
- Match the positive (+) and negative (–) ends correctly.
- Make sure the batteries sit firmly in place.
5. Close The Battery Door.
If it won’t close easily, the battery may be inserted incorrectly. Reconfigure them if that’s the case, make sure their ends are tightly in place.
6. Test The Device.
Press and hold the TEST button until you hear the alarm sound. This confirms it’s functioning properly.
7. Reattach The Unit.
Place it back on the mounting bracket and twist or slide it into place.
If you replace the batteries and the alarm is still beeping, just give us a call—the entire unit might need to be replaced, or it may require a full reset, which we can handle. As a best practice, replace the batteries at least once a year or whenever it starts chirping, whichever comes first.
